Looking for Some Brain Game Resources?

There are so many options available and it is important to keep looking for those which might appeal to you. Here are a few ideas and I would encourage you to share the ones you enjoy with others.

1. Check out the AARP website which includes games like Freecell, Spider Solitaire and many others.  Many years one of my younger traumatic brain injury clients with significant memory issues was introduced to the game of Freecell and after several months she was able to develop better attention, concentration and problem solving skills when playing this game.

2.   Free Rice caught my attention many years ago. It shows you vocabulary words where you pick the meaning given several choices. As you get more correct, you advance to harder words. For each one you get right,  they donate 10 grains of rice through the Free World Programme to help end hunger. There are also vocabularies in other language. Other areas include Humanities, Math, Geography, Grammar, Chemistry, and Sciences.  I studied French many decades ago in high school and was surprised to see how many of the vocabulary words I recalled given the 4 choices. Have fun!

3. Set  – The Family Game of Visual Perception.  Here is the main site but go to the tutorial  to get started. My neighbor brought this game to a party many years ago and I was hooked. I have given it to many people as a gift and most days I start off with my cup of coffee and the daily puzzle online. If you cannot get all of the 6 possibilities, you can find the answers posted the next day.

4. Great Lecture Library is an outstanding resource for speakers from all walks of life. It is also a great resource for keeping your mind active and learning something new from some of the best.

1.  Working with Words. (Volume 3) Not a puzzle person? This book has 4 types of word games and the fill in the missing letters, hidden words and crossword puzzles start out very simple and gradually progress to more complex. When it was written decades ago I used it as a tool for stroke patients to improve printing with their non-dominant hand, short term memory skills, and problem solving skills. One gentleman progressed in his rehab, used this book to improve many of his deficits and eventually made his way through the pages from beginning to end. He had never done puzzles before and wanted to know where the next volume was. Now some of my clients with early memory loss are using this as a tool if they have never done word games before. 2.  Putting the Pieces Together: A Linguistically Based Cognitive Training Manual  (Volume 4)
Here is a book full of challenging exercises for visual-spatial, numerical and verbal reasoning. You will  find exercises for problem solving, inductive/deductive reasoning, conceptualization, organization, judgment,  sequencing, attention and concentration. Each of the areas progress from simple to complex with information on the sample pages showing how the solution was obtained.  More information    Sample Pages

3. Memory Fitness Toolkit includes Walking the Path to Memory Fitness One Week at a Time with day by day suggestions directed toward increasing a person’s awareness of the keys to memory fitness. The Brain Teasers product provides a wide variety of activities to challenge your brain. More information and sample pages.

4. Reminiscence Puzzle Books. Many decades after creating Working with Words I created these puzzle books which were a favorite of mine to write because it took me down memory lane and in the process helped me to better relate to those born many decades before I was. There are fill-in puzzles, word searches, crossword puzzles and reminiscence brain teasers focusing on people and happenings from the 20th century. 5. Connecting the Generations: Your Stories – My Stories provides questions on a wide variety of topics that young and old can ask each other. So often there are stories that do not get passed along. This resource may give you some ideas on ways to begin sharing them.  Sample Page| Sample Page
