When you start your day, you may not plan to get caught up in the rushing around but it seems to just happen. There was something that came up that has to be squeezed into your schedule or you recall something you forgot to do. Hurrying often promotes skimming the surface. You do what needs to be done but it may not be as complete as possible or there is not time to double check what you did or return something to its proper place.
Slowing down means taking more time with what you are doing. It is about being present in the here and now. Many years ago I came across a very interesting book Addicted to Hurry by Kirk Byron Jones and found his information important enough to include as part of my memory fitness programs. He feels this need for rushing can diminish the quality of our lives. It can also negatively impact your attention span and that is not helpful for recalling information. Savoring the moment, taking time to notice what you are hearing, seeing or doing are just a few of keys to maximizing your memory.
TO DO THIS WEEK:
If you would like to do better remembering where you put an item, take a breath first, slow your pace and pay attention. Take a few moments every hour and check in with yourself. Are you moving at a normal pace or too quickly from one thing on your “to do” list to the next? Pause, stop, regroup for a minute then continue.
